Working with People: A Critical QA Skill
By JJ ·
QA isn’t a silo. We succeed not just by what we automate or report—but by how well we communicate, coordinate, and collaborate. If you're a QA engineer, make it your mission to know your team beyond the ticketing tool. Become the person who knows who to call when something breaks, when something’s unclear, or when something feels off. Because that human connection is what truly elevates quality.
Why Working with People Is a Must-Have Skill for QA Engineers
Beyond Bugs and Automation: QA Is a Human-Centric Role
Working with people is one of the most underrated yet powerful skills a QA engineer can develop. I remember a job interview where I was asked to create a QA plan for their mobile app. While most candidates focused solely on test scenarios and automation coverage, what caught the interviewer's attention in my plan was something else entirely—my approach to knowing whom to connect with in different situations. And looking back, I still believe this is one of the most important things a QA team can possess.
Why Knowing the “Go-To” Person Matters
Communication Over Isolation
As a QA engineer, you’re not just a gatekeeper—you’re a bridge. A bridge between development, operations, product, and end users. Here’s what I had included in that plan—and why it mattered so much: Who in the DevOps team can help with access issues or guide us on how to check logs, especially when a test fails in staging or CI? Who in the development team owns different parts of the system—backend, frontend, or mobile—and can assist with debugging or clarifying implementation? Who in the product team can tell us why a particular feature was built or why something is being fixed in a particular sprint? Who is the business analyst or UX designer we can approach to understand user journeys or validation rules? Knowing the answers to these questions doesn't just save time—it prevents blockers, misunderstandings, and improves the overall quality of what gets delivered.
This Is a Skill AI Won’t Replace
Emotional Intelligence Still Belongs to Humans
QA is more than scripts. It’s about asking questions. Understanding motivations. Collaborating to solve real problems. And let’s be real—AI might generate tests or write scripts faster than us, but it still can’t walk up to a teammate, empathize, and negotiate a better solution. And let’s be real—AI might generate tests or write scripts faster than us, but it still can’t walk up to a teammate, empathize, and negotiate a better solution. That’s why I say: working with people is not just a soft skill—it’s a power skill for QA engineers.
